836-B6-060 Forms of organization in rural communities of the Northern Region of Costa Rica: a comparative analysis between the associations of development of Aguas Zarcas and La Fortuna during the 1970’s

Objetivo:

To analyze the functioning of development associations in the Aguas Zarcas and La Fortuna de San Carlos districts during the 1970s, to interpret their role in shaping local power networks and links with intra and inter-regional social parties in that period.

Descripción:

The project consists of a study on the organization of rural communities during the 1970s, specifically the local functioning of organizational forms promoted from institutional spheres. In this case, the focus is placed on the Community Development Associations that had a significant boom during the 1970s, creating links with other rural action entities, such as the respective municipalities, the National Youth Movement and even with the Peace Corps of the USA. For this reason, the study of such associations becomes a window to recognize local and regional networks, as well as to identify the needs, projects, conflicts and forms of negotiation between social parties. The Aguas Zarcas district is compared with the La Fortuna district, both in San Carlos, since in the course of the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, these became centers of faster growth than the other districts, mainly due to their geographical position, since they are crossing points located on the roads that directly communicate San Carlos with the North Caribbean region and Chorotega respectively, which makes it important to know the role they played at the time that the North Region was being configured as such, around the seventies.
