836-C0-309 Practices and speeches on Good Living present in the worldview of Afro-limonense communities

Objetivo:

To determine the characteristics of Good Living present in the socio-cultural practices of the Afro-Costa Rican population in Limon province, in order to highlight the particular values that this population possesses and that might be an example to the rest of the country.

Descripción:

By means of this project, we pretend to analyze the characteristics of Good Living present in the socio-cultural practices of the Afro-limonense population regarding the daily experiences of people in two communities of Limon: Limon, central district and Cahuita, through participant observations, interviews with people from both communities, and focus groups with different ethereal groups, in order to emphasize the values and the principles present in such practices that go beyond economic reductionism to adequately include the socio-identity dimension.

The Good Living theory that will be used as central theory in this study, highlights the value of coexistence, and not only of ‘living’; the harmony with oneself, with others, with communities, and with the environment; the value of self-defining practices that reliably ensure the Good Living of people; it is linked to spirituality and the feelings of people inside a community, and highlights true happiness, which also is identified through practices like solidarity, harmony, peace, amongst many others.

It is intended to go further than defining wellbeing from an economical perspective as is characteristic of neoliberal societies, to highlight practices of afro-limonense communities, including their values, gastronomy, socio-religious, family, and linguistic activities which constitute the evidence of the Good Living. Furthermore, the primary objective is to highlight the positive aspects of the afro-costarican population from the everyday practices of their communities to emphasize their value inside these same afro-limonense communities and beyond, with the purpose of changing the discriminatory and xenophobic concept that is held on the target population. Specifically, it is intended to answer the research question: Which Good Living characteristics are present in the socio-cultural practices of the afro-costarican population in the province of Limon?
