836-B8-197 Between resistance and oblivion. Strategies for preserving and strengthening of Creole in afro-descendant families

Objetivo:

To examine the ways of teaching and promoting the Creole language in a representative group of Afro-Limonense families to determine the state of transmission of that language in the province of Limón.

Descripción:

Given that some studies agree that one of the minority languages with the largest number of speakers in Costa Rica, namely Limone’s Creole, is clearly weakened for mainly socio-political reasons and that the younger Afro-Limonense generations hardly speak it because they think that “it is of no use to them” or that “Creole is poorly spoken English”, the suspicion arises that a significant percentage of young Afro-Limonense parents do not encourage the learning of Creole in new generations; Thus, it is quite possible that even younger generations are mostly monolingual to Spanish and that Creole is primarily spoken by adults or older adults; at best, younger generations may be passive Creole speakers, but that they do so in very limited contexts. In fact, an exploratory study of this field reveals precisely that.

This project is designed to clarify the current reality regarding the promotion of Limon’s Creole within the family in two districts of the province of Limón in young generations through surveys of fathers, mothers, stepfathers and stepmothers, as well as their sons and daughters children under 15 years old in a group of families from that province. Not only will the number of families that promote Creole learning and the way they do it, as well as the reasons why they do it, be investigated, but the percentage of young people under 15 who truly conceive themselves as creole speakers and their perception of it.

The results of this research will define the need to strengthen that minority language, in order to avoid further weakening and disappearing in the medium or short term. As a future research-action work, it is expected to be able to work with Afro-descendant communities in different areas of the province of Limón to extol the importance of Creole in order to maintain and revitalize its identity roots through formal and informal activities in which It is achieved that a greater number of families value and promote the promotion of their Creole language, next to Spanish.
