836-C2-330 Designing and implementing the application FUNREAD: A tool for pedagogical mediation for teaching English to sixth grade students of the Jesús de Nazareth school in Liberia.

Objetivo:

To design the application FUNREAD for its implementation as a pedagogical mediation tool with the purpose of improving the English linguistic competence of sixth grade students of the Jesús de Nazareth school in Liberia.

Descripción:

This research project’s main objective is to design the application FUNREAD for its implementation as a pedagogical mediation tool of dual modality (in-class and distance education) with the goal of improving the English linguistic competence (e.g., vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and reading comprehension with an emphasis on general ideas and reading comprehension details.) of sixth grade students of the Jesús de Nazareth school in Liberia. For its design, a didactic unit in the sixth grade course of study as a base and three gamification mechanics are implemented (e.g., classification, points, prizes). Likewise, the application will be based on comic book stories that incorporate aspects that highlight social justice and cultural diversity (ethnic, social class, special needs, language, gender, age, nationality, religion, and sexual identity) in the Costa Rican environment. The participants of the study will include 90 students separated into three groups (30 students per group) and three Sixth-grade English Teachers of the Jesús de Nazareth public school, located in the Nazareth neighborhood, school that serves as a representative of the urbanistic marginal zone of the central district of Liberia, and sets an example to the primary schools that serve to this kind of student population at a national level, which require much help, specially during the pandemic. Parting from a model of Design-based research (DBR), with a mixed focus, this study will be developed in six iterative phases (discussed in detail in the Methodology section) in which there will be observations, interviews, focus groups, surveys, follow-up questionnaires, and pre-post tests. This iterative process will be able to be completely implemented online if the recovery of information on-site is not feasible.
