836-B2-115 The acquisition of Spanish as a mother tongue for Costa Rican children of preschool ages, second stage: morpho-syntactic aspects

Objetivo:

To study morpho-syntactic patterns in the acquisition of Spanish produced spontaneously by a group of monolingual Spanish boys and girls, in the western area of Costa Rica, with ages between 3 and 5 years and six months.

Descripción:

The project consisted of the analysis of four morpho-syntactic patterns in the spontaneous language of 15 children between 3 years and six months and 5 years and six months. A total of 53 files (at least 3 per boy) were meticulously analyzed in light of a thorough and methodical analysis of previous studies on language acquisition in boys and girls. The final analysis revealed a series of patterns regarding: 1) the acquisition of verbal inflections, 2) gender and number inflections in nominal phrases 3) the use of null subjects 4) the word order, specifically, the position of the subject with respect to the verb and the complements in declarative and interrogative constructions. Regarding the first aspect, 233 verb forms were evident which contained pronunciation errors; errors in number and gender concordance in the use of clitic pronouns; incorrect use of person and time, mostly ir-regularization of regular verbs and regularization of irregular verbs. Regarding the acquisition of nominal phrases, the study revealed few errors of gender agreement (only 8 in a total of 1202 nominal phrases analyzed and an even smaller number of errors in adjectival phrases (3 in 104). With respect to the use of null subjects, it was found that most of the declarative sentences contained a visible subject (96.7%), while the subjects were invisible or null in 52.8% of them. verbal (i.e., SVO, VO), whereas sentences of type OVS, OV, VSO were much less frequent.
